Cooperation of consumers must to check unscrupulous trade practices: Taj

Stressing the need for launching sustained awareness campaign regarding consumer rights, Minister for Consumers Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) Mr. Taj Mohi-ud-Din has called for safeguarding rights of consumers at any cost.
The Minister was speaking at 12th meeting of State Consumer Protection Council held here today.
The Minister directed for intensifying market checking operations so that black-marketers are prevented from resorting to unscrupulous trade practices. He, however, urged the consumers to come forward and help in curbing profiteering, saying they have to play vital role by way of raising voice.
It was enjoined upon consumers not to make any purchase without having a look of updated rate lists and in case any shopkeeper charges higher than approved rates, concerned authorities should be contacted immediately. “People should shun inhibitions and register complaints against profiteers”, the Minister said “without their whole hearted cooperation the menace of profiteering is difficult to stop”.
The meeting called for regular and uninterrupted power supply in metered areas of the state and revision of vegetable rates on weekly basis. “In no case vegetable sellers should sell vegetables more than 20% of the rates in wholesale vegetable market”, the meeting observed..
The meeting demanded installation of digital meters in auto rickshaws to prevent over charging. People should also be made aware about the use of meters in these rickshaws.
It was urged upon transporters not to park their vehicles on roads and lanes. Similarly people were appealed not to dump construction material on road sides as it hampers smooth movement of traffic.
The meeting called for observance of consumer day in all educational institutions mandatory so that students from very beginning are sensitized about consumer rights and obligations. It also demanded proper sitting arrangement at airports for boarders and people accompanying them to see off or receive.
The meeting also discussed the issues relating to creation of parking slots, fixing of uniform cable charges, checking of meters in PCO’s, establishment of state food testing laboratory, etc.
