Jammu | Oct 6
Gandhigiri does not work in Kashmir –the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has been told this in explicit terms as he has come under a Fatwa of the head priest of Kashmir.
Close to the heels of criticism unleashed against the Chief Minister by separatist hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani for preaching Ghandhian philosophy in Kashmir, the head priest of the Valley, "Mufti-e-Aazam Kashmir", Mufti Bashiruddin issued a 'fatwa' against him for alleged blasphemy. Seeking to put the Chief Minister in the league of the people of the ilk of Salman Rushdie, Azad has been accused of eulogising Gandhian philosophy of non-violence.
Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad during a function on Gandhi Jayanti on Oct 2 last has said that by following Islam one secures after death, while by following Gandhian philosophy one can build a developed and peaceful society.
The chief minister's comment has drawn angry response from hardline All Party Hurriet Conference chairman of his faction Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who asked Muftis and ulemas to issue a 'fatwa' against Ghulam Nabi Azad for alleged blasphemy. He asked Jammu and Kashmir chief minister to rename himself as Ghulam Gandhi Azad.
The Mufti-e-Azam of Kashmir(Head priest) Mufti Bashiruddin bowing before the pressure of hardliners and issuing a fatwa against chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said, " Hazrat Nabi(PBUH) is our last prophet, and the path shown by him is the best path besides for every Muslim following Islam is the only way to achieve the ultimate in this world and the other world."
He further said that a true Muslim does not have to follow Gandhian philosophy to achieve something and anybody who preaches anything against Islamic tennets is a non-believer.
Mufti Bashirudding asked chief minister to repent and seek pardon for his comments (Tauba kare aur Maafi Mange).
When asked by News Agency of Kashmir to where and when he(Azad) should seek pardon, Mufti bashirruddin said that, he(Azad) knows where and when.
