| 9 killed on Gen Kapoor's first visit | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 6 On the occasion of first Jammu and Kashmir visit of new Army Chief Gen Deepak Kapoor, at least seven militants were killed in different operations even as the new commander categorically ruled out in troop reduction in the state. Insisting that there is a rise in militancy-related violence in Jammu and Kashmir , new General Kapoor said there will be no troop reduction till the state returns to normalcy. "The attempts by militants to infiltrate into the (Kashmir) valley for increasing the level of violence are still continuing. The killing of nine militants here on Wednesday and three in Tangdhar yesterday is a proof of it," he told reporters after being briefed by the officers of 34 Rashtriya Rifles in central Kashmir today. Meanwhile, Seven militants and two army jawans were killed today when security forces foiled two infiltration bids near Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The troops foiled an infiltration bid in Tangdhar sector near LoC and killed six militants on the spot, a defence spokesman said here. Two jawans also lost their lives in the gun battle, which was still continuing. Meanwhile, another infiltrating militant was killed by troops along the LoC in Baramulla district. With today's incidents, army has foiled four bids by militants to infiltrate into Kashmir in as many days. At least 19 militants and five army personnel were killed in these incidents. Yesterday, three militants and an army jawan were killed in a foiled infiltration bid in Tangdhar sector of the state. Nine infiltrating militants and two army Majors were killed in a 40-hour gunbattle in Tangmarg area on Wednesday. This is the third failed infiltration bid by suspected militants in the Kashmir valley in four days, a defence spokesman said. A total of 17 militants and three army personnel have been killed in the encounters. Three militants and a soldier were killed during another alleged bid to cross the Line of Control in Tangdhar sector on Friday. Nine infiltrating militants and two Indian Army officers were killed in a 36-hour gunbattle in Tangmarg area which ended on Wednesday. Intelligence gathered by the army indicates that militants based in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir have been making desperate attempts to infiltrate into the Indian side of the valley before winter sets in and most routes are closed due to heavy snowfall. |
