| Left raises stink over Sonia's remarks | | | New Delhi | Oct 8 Downplaying Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's remarks that are being seen as a veiled attack on the Left, the party today said she had spoken in the context of Haryana and refuted the allies' charge that the UPA was surrendering vital national interests to the US. "Whatever she had said was in the context of Haryana and there is no need for seeing it in the national context," Congress spokesman Satyavrat Chaturvedi told PTI. "It was a programme in Haryana in which she had commented on the situation in the state," he said. Referring to the opposition to the nuclear deal, Gandhi had yesterday told a public meeting in Haryana "we must understand that such elements are not only the enemies of Congress but they are also enemies of progress and development. We have to give them a strong and befitting reply." The Congress also refuted Left suggestions that the party-led coalition was surrendering vital national interests to America over the Indo-US nuclear deal and said Gandhi's remarks yesterday have been taken out of context.
"There is no question of surrendering vital national interests. We are a sovereign democratic nation and the largest democracy in the world. We have always protected national interest and any agreement will always be in the national interest," he said.
"We will talk to them (Left) when we meet tomorrow and assuage their apprehensions," Chaturvedi said. Asked if the Congress would clarify Gandhi's remarks at the meeting, he said if the Left parties raised it, then it would set the record straight. A day after Gandhi made a veiled attack on opponents of the Indo-US nuclear deal, the Left parties today hit back, saying that India need not surrender its "vital interests" to America on the agreement. |
