RRL, Jammu to showcase Indian Traditional medicine through contemporary science in USA

JAMMU, August 19, Dr. G. N. Qazi, Director Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu has been nominated to lead a twelve member Indian delegation to participate in the 5th Oxford International Conference on Science of Botanicals (ICSB) at National Center for Natural Products Research, School of Pharmacy, The University of Mississippi, USA from August 21-24, 2006. The conference is sponsored by Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition of U. S. Food and Drug Administration and Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi.


During Indo_US Symposium on Scientific Approaches to Quality, Safety and Efficacy Assessment of Ayurvedic and Botanical Products organised by RRL, Jammu & NCNPR, USA from 3-6 October, 2005 at New Delhi, an MoU was signed between CSIR, New Delhi and The University of Mississippi, USA for co-operation in the field of "Development of Herbal and Botanical Products of Global Standards". To carry forward this whole process, the H’onble Minister of Science & Technology and Vice President CSIR has approved the deputation of a 12 member delegation drawn from CSIR, ICMR, DST, Department of AYUSH, Academia and herbal Drug Industry. During the conference, the main agenda of this delegation is to deliver lectures on various aspects of botanicals – including cultivation, chemical, biological, toxicological, regulatory aspects and Product development etc. The candidates for Investigative New Drugs (IND's) which will be projected during the conference will be drawn from the successful leads obtained in the NIMTLI project in the area of Osteo -arthritis and hepatoprotectants.


The conference will also provide Indian delegation a forum to showcase the strength / approaches of the Indian botanical Industry and the R&D Institutes to the International community including the government regulatory authorities. It would also help the delegation to understand consumer demands and quality parameters in International market and develop methods of production that meet those demands of product quality and efficacy, which either exceeds or corresponds to international standards.





The participants to this conference will be drawn from NIH, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, members of American Herbal Products Association, US herbals/ nutraceuticals Industry, participants from International Society for Horticultural Sciences (ISHS), members of the US / EU/ Canadian Pharmacopoeial committees etc.


RRL, Jammu has also signed various bilateral agreements with several Biotech, Pharma and consumer products companies in USA under an Umbrella agreement signed between the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), India and US companies.


The CSIR delegation with Dr. G. N. Qazi will also visit most of these companies in USA to explore further areas of cooperation with RRL, Jammu.
