| Narrow escape for Shastri Club in U-19 cricket | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 9 Shastri Cricket Club (SCC) today had a narrow escape in the Satish Sharma memorial under-19 cricket tournament winning the match by just one run to advance into the next round at Parade ground, here. Shastri Club managed to restrict Khalsa Club to a score of 191 for eight in 35 overs after setting a target of 193 runs losing all their wickets in 30.3 overs, thereby making it a slight one run win. Ram Dayal, who captained state’s under-19 team that played one-dayers at Srinagar, infact changed the game in favour of Shastri Club. He first contributed 44-ball 66 runs including 12 boundaries and a six and later took two wickets. Ankit Basin and Manik Gupta also played well adding valuable 38 (4x4, 1x6) and 25 (3x4) runs respectively. From Khalsa Club, Puma was most successful bowler with three wickets while Goga and Gagan shared a piece each. Other five batsmen were run out. Batting second, Khalsa could not make a good start and lost their first wicket with just nine runs on the board.. However, they picked up their innings steadily by adding singles and doubles to the total and were comfortable at one point of time with 84 for three. But their strategy to save wickets at the cost of run-rate proved fatal for them and when time come to accelerate the score the basmen failed to catch the remaining score. No doubt Khalsa Club were having two wickets in hand, but they exhausted their allotted quota of 35 overs with just two runs required to win and one for making it a draw. Uday Vir Singh made unbeaten 43 while Sonu contributed 41 studded with one six and six fours. Gagan Singh also displayed good batting skills making 28 runs. There were 35 extras. Ram Dayal bagged two wickets for Shastri Club while Manik, Ankit, Akash and Bandeep shared one each. For his all-round performance, Ram Dayal was adjudged man of the match.Today’s match was officiated by Brij Mohan and Santa Singh Next match: MA Stadium XI to face Luxmi Cricket Club at 8.30 am tomorrow. |
