Azad places Qazi Afzal’s ball in Mufti’s court

Srinagar | Oct 9
Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad has placed the ball in the court of the PDP patron, Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, by seeking his advice on the latest letter written by Qazi Mohd.Afzal in which he had requested Azad to accept his resignation from the cabinet.
PDP sources said that in his letter Mr Azad had sought Mufti Mohd.Sayeed’s advice on whether the Qazi’s resignation should be accepted or not. The Qazi had sent the letter asking the Chief Minister to accept his resignation after he (Qazi) had made it known that he would abide by the PDP decision.
It is now for the Mufti either to shoot the ball back in Azad’s court or keep silent as the Chief Minister had done by not replying to the second letter the Qazi had written to him.
PDP sources said that Mufti Mohd.Sayeed will discuss the matter with senior party leaders and indications are that he may either convey to the Chief Minister that Qazi would be persuaded to resume his duties as a cabinet minister in case the forest portfolio was restored to him or leave it to Mr Azad to decide whichever course he would like to adopt.
Since the preliminary inquiry carried out by the committee headed by commissioner Home B.R.Kundal in which suspicion has fallen on one PDP Minister and former bureaucrats for patronizing sacked Managing Director of Forest Corporation, Aijaz Ahmed, for creating artificial scarcity of timber to promote imports the Chief Minister may be unwilling to restore forest portfolio to the Qazi. He may like to clear the mess in the Forest department and the corporation. Indications are that the PDP leadership may not insist on retaining the Qazi in the cabinet because in that case Mufti sayeed could rehabilitate two party leaders who continue to sulk after they lost the cabinet post.
