| WMHD celebrated across the state | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 10 'World Mental Health Day', was today celebrated across the state, the day presents another opportunity to end the silence, remove the shame and reduce stigma which the people across the globe including Kashmiris are facing. The WMHD, established by the World Federation for Mental Health, is observed all over the world on October 10 since 1950. It raises public awareness about mental health issues and provides an opportunity to the interested groups and organizations to raise awareness and publicize the work about mental health that continues all year round. On this day, across the world hundreds of organizations would organize events to draw attention of the concerned authorities. Despite holyday the day was celebrated at all the district headquarters and seminars were held in schools and colleges where the speakers suggest various measures to control the mental disorder which according to reports is increasing day by day. Yet having a mental illness still becomes a cause for silence and a source of shame, and mental disorders are associated with high levels of stigma and discrimination. In Jammu and Kashmir, the number of mental patients has touched nearly to thousands, sources said, adding that the report says that over 70,000 people across the state consulted physiatrists and a good number of them have been diagnosed with the serious disorders caused due to the tension and social stigmas. Around 1400 cases of mental disorder were recorded in the year 1990 which has gone to about fifty thousand in 2007, sources quoting health survey department told News Agency of Kashmir adding that, thousands who suffered the disastrous effects of the October 2005 earthquake are now experiencing symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Alone in the armed forces the mental disorder is found not only among the jawans are forces to commit suicides but the officers also came under the stress syndrome. Mental illness has touched one in every twenty lives in the state of Jammu and Kashmir a large number of people have become victim of mental disorder and are facing social threats at the hands of the time. |
