| Hero Honda – JAKLI motor cycle expedition flagged off | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 10 On the occasion of Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, in order to honour the troops deployed in Counter Insurgency operations, a Hero Honda –Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Motor Cycle expedition was flagged off from Manipur. The expedition is led by Lieutenant Colonel Ramesh Desai alongwith 11 Jawans of 15 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry. The expedition started at Imphal (Manipur) – Siachen (J&K) will finish off at New Delhi covering distance of 8000 kms over a pd of 20 days. Today, the expedition reached Akhnoor, Major General AK Malik, General Officer Commanding, Crossed Swords Division flagged off the expedition from Akhnoor to New Delhi. The General Officer was reminiscent of the brave efforts of the local population of Jammu and Kashmir who, when called upon by Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Abdullah in 1947-48 to take guard against Pakistani intruders who had infiltrated into Jammu and Kashmir, took up the cudgels and fought valiantly against these. These local formed a Militia force who assisted the Indian Army in fighting these intruders. Originally 14 Battalions of Jammu and Kashmir militia were under the State Government, however keeping in view the valiant efforts put in by these in the 1947, 1962,1965 and 1971 operations, in 1976 they were taken under the wings of Indian Army as Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment. Presently Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment has 15 Infantry battalions and three Territorial Army battalions. For their undying loyalty and service to the nation in the various wars they have been awarded 04 Battle honours, 02 Theatre honours, 01 Param Veer Chakra, 02 Ashok Chakra, 05 Param Vishisht Seva Medal, 11 Mahavir Chakra, 04 Kirti Chakra, 08 Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, 42 Veer Chakra, 23 Shourya Chakra and 183 Sena Medals. For this expedition, Hero Honda provided twelve motor cycles and their maintenance assistance as well as Indian Oil Corporation has provided petrol, oil and lubricants to the expedition of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry. The historic motor cycle expedition will help our countrymen in recognizing the efforts put in by the Indian Army in maintaining peace and stability in the region. |
