Srinagar | Oct 10
Sixty-five percent of the total apple produce in the country is grown in J&K State. This was stated by minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Abdul Aziz Zargar today. Zargar said that Cooperative Movement in India has played a decisive and visible role in the socio-economic development of the country. He said appointment of Task Force, initially for the short term credit structure, followed by the appointment of same Task Force for the Long Term Cooperative Credit Structure is, indeed, an appreciable decision of the Central Government. He was speaking at an interactive session attended by Ministers for Finance and Cooperatives of various states, held at New Delhi today to finalize the Report on Revival of Long Term Cooperative Structure in consultation with the state governments.
Addressing the session, Zargar said that economic surveys being conducted annually acknowledge the fact that though the over all flow of institutional credit has increased over the years yet there are still several gaps in the system. He said the role of cooperative financial institutions becomes more important in view of the fact that in the State plan and Non Plan Budget, the Agriculture Sector is not a prioritized one and the allocations are extremely low.
The Minister said that despite the very difficult law and order problems, the Cooperative Banks in the state have been at the forefront in the service of the farming community, especially in development of the horticulture sector of the state.
Zargar said that state government has initiated pragmatic steps to revive the Cooperative Movement in the state and got established a new institution under the name of Jammu and Kashmir Milk Producers Cooperative Ltd with the collaboration of Gujrat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation.
Appealing to Prime Minister and Union Finance Minister, Zargar said that any investment in J&K, including the present one, shall be an investment for peace and development of the State. The restoration of peace in the state is a dream envisioned by one and all in the country” Zargar added.
