| Cross voting not ruled out in Bishnah Municipal election | | Congress Councilors asked to vote for Attri | | Govind Chouhan Jammu | Oct 10 Behind the scene attempts are being made to woo the voters in the October 13 election for the post of President and Vice President of Municipal Committee Bishnah and leaders of different political parties have made a beeline at the tehsil headquarters to seek support of the councilors. According to sources, leaders of PDP, Congress and BJP are in touch with the councilors to woo them in favour of their candidates. The committee has a total strength of 13 with one seat vacant following the death of a lady Councilor. The Congress had seven members but due to switching over to one of its Councilors the strength has been reduced to just six. The opposition group, consisting BJP, PDP and Independents are evenly balanced, as both have six members now. The Congress had a strength of seven members while the other group consisting BJP,PDP and Independents had five members. Of these five, BJP and PDP has one Councilor each and three others are Independents. However, with the joining of the Congress Councilor Attri with the opposition group the strength of the Congress has been reduced to that of the Opposition. Both the groups are presently equally balanced and a single vote here and there would decide the fate of the Presidential candidate. If present indications are any guide, both the groups are making hectic and close door parlays to win the support of at least one of the rival members to ensure victory of their candidate. Sources said that bargaining is reportedly going on from the both the sides to win the support of the councilors. Sources said that senior Congress leader Shashi Sharma at a meeting of the party activists has appealed all Congress Councilors to iron out their difference in the broader interests of the party and en mass vote for Ajay Attri for the President and Suraj Parkash of the opposition group for Vice president . Under the prevailing circumstances, the cross voting, from either side is not ruled out If sources are to be believed some leaders have even offered Rs. two lakh each to some two to three Councilors to woo their support Here it is to be mentioned that the Bishnah Municipal election took a new turn on October 4 last when a Congress Councilor broke away from his original group and jumped in the opposition group and filed her nomination papers for the post of President. It may be recalled that elections of the President and Vice President of the Municipal Committee was scheduled some two years back and these two posts remained vacant since then due to the resignation of the then President and Vice President and later the elections were withheld following Court order. There are two candidates each for the posts of President and Vice President. They include Ajay Atri and Sanjeev Kumar for presidentship and Suraj Prakash and Rakesh Sharma for vice-president. |
