| Poonch may not go to polls | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 10 As a divided house of National Conference gets drawn into a trilateral in-house battle in Poonch leaving a level playing field for the opposition, chances are not ruled out that the constituency might not go the elections at all. Sources said that the authorities are weighing the options of emerging political scenario to conduct by-elections in Poonch assembly constituency. This segment had fallen vacant upon demise of sitting National Conference legislator Ghulam Mohammad Jan. A son of late Jan, daughter of another National Conference leader and Sheikh family loyalist are fighting it out against each other in the Poonch segment even though the sitting member of Legislative Council Bashir Ahmed Naaz too have staked his claim to contest the elections. Though Naaz is playing it safe as he is already enjoying a seat in the Upper House but the two other contestants are daggers drawn with each other. Sources pointed out that the Election Department is yet to gear up for holding by-elections in the Poonch constituency. The Election Department will now hold a meeting on November 6 to decide on whether or not hold the elections at this stage. If Poonch does not go to elections in the month of November or December, this will come as a sufficient hint of early assembly elections across the state. "If one goes by the moves of pre-poning assembly elections, then the Election Commission of India may consider putting off polls on the single vacant assembly segment", said a knowledgeable source privy to the discussions in the state election department. |
