| Kashmir Mughal Gardens - part of int'l network | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar Oct 11
The Mughal Gardens of Kashmir have been included in the international network of historical gardens, according to INTACH. The network, set up by the US-based University of Illinois in its Department of Historical Architecture, would hold its first conference in Urbhana, Champaign Illinois on November 1-2. The conference would aim at setting up an international platform for sharing of experiences and has drawn experts, advocacy bodies and landscape architects from India, Pakistan, Europe and America, INTACH-Jammu and Kashmir Chapter Convenor M Saleem Beg said. The INTACH-Jammu and Kashmir Chapter, which had been lobbying for setting up of this network, would be represented by Mr Beg at the two-day conference. Beg would make a detailed presentation at the conference on the changes that these Mughal Gardens have undergone in the last century, resulting in gradual loss of their historical character. He would also dwell on conservation issues related to restoring these gardens to their pristine glory. Beg said Kashmir has the largest number of Mughal gardens in the Indian subcontinent. Although many still exist in their original layout and setting, human intervention and the ravages of time mean that their original features are often lost, he added. |
