| Militants go mad before 'ceasefire' | | 10 soldiers, 2 civilians killed; HM, LeT claim attacks | | Early Times Reporter Jammu Oct 11 A day ahead of the scheduled operationalisation of the "promised ceasefire" the militants today went on a made campaign to target the security forces killing a dozen of soldiers and others in different incidents. At least seven army personnel and two civilians were killed in a massive gas cylinder explosion in an army canteen at Pattan in north Kashmir this morning. Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), which has declared a three-day unilateral ceasefire from tomorrow, has claimed responsibility for the blast. The police said a gas cylinder exploded inside the canteen of 102 Engineers Regiment. "The canteen building was completely damaged in the explosion. The wounded have been shifted to a nearby hospital," a senior police officer said. An HM spokesman said they detonated the blast at the canteen, in which more than a dozen soldiers were killed and scores wounded. In another incident, militants carried out a suicide attack on a CRPF battalion headquarters housed in a hotel at Boulvard along the banks of the famous Dal lake in Srinagar late this evening. According to latest information, three jawans were killed in the gunbattle between militants and CRPF jawans. The attack on the CRPF camp took place at a time when the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was hosting an Iftaar party at nearby Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC). Militants hurled grenade and followed it by firing on the sentry post at the main gate of the headquarters of 144th battalion triggering a gunfight. "We had alerted the security agencies about escalation in violence five days back. We had reports from across the border that anti-social elements would try to incite violence before Eid," the intelligence sources said. After the incident, the whole area was immediately cordoned off and efforts are on to neutralise the militants, whose number was not known immediately. The sources said it was not immediately known whether the militants had managed to gain entry into the camp or barred by the jawans from entering into their headquarters. A police spokesman said that intense firing is going on between the two sides and reinforcements have been rushed to the area.
