A hale and hearty former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah was today seen rubbing shoulders with Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad while offering Friday prayers in Srinagar but there is definitely someone who would not have liked to see this.
May Farooq live long, but the 'informed' circles of the state were shocked this afternoon when some mischievous elements set rumour mill churning about critically ill health of Dr Abdullah. Not only this, an SMS going rounds in several circles, shocking the politicians and media persons alike, read that Dr Farooq Abdullah has passed away after a massive heart attack.
Sources in Srinagar said that many people rushed to the Gupkar Road residence of the Abdullahs while hundreds others made phone calls to the NC leaders and media outlets to confirm the "news".
"No one has certainty of life, when I heard this, for a while I was taken aback", said a senior National Conference leader while speaking to EARLY TIMES on phone from Srinagar. While praying for long life of Dr Abdullah, he expressed regrets about what he described as most unfortunate and cheap mischief of someone who spread the rumour.
Meanwhile, later Dr Abdullah's brother and party general secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmed termed ''malicious propaganda by vested interests'' the rumours about the death of party patron following a massive heart attack.
''The rumours have been floated by vested interests. It is a malicious propaganda. He (Dr Abdullah) is fit and fine. He offered Friday prayers at the Hazratbal shrine on Jumat-ul-Wida (last Friday in Ramzan month,'' NC General Secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmed said.
