The Congress, the PDP, the National Conference, the BJP and the Panthers Party had organised series of public rallies in various parts of the state between July and the middle of September. Since senior functionaries of the Congress, the PDP and the National Conference observed fasts during the month of Ramzan rallies and conferences for mobilizing peoples’ support of their organizations were suspended. Political leaders confirmed that except for indoor meetings no public rally or party conventions were organized during the last one month because people, busy in fasts and prayers, would not attend these rallies. National Conference Provincial President,Mr Ajay Sadhotra, said that the party leadership would strengthen its mass mobilization programme. The PDP General secretary,Mr Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, said “public meetings were suspended because of the month of Ramzan. The pre-poll activities will be revived after the end of Eid and Diwali Celebrations.” Senior BJP leader, Dr Nirmal Singh said “we may kickstart pre-poll campaign from October 23 when a meeting of party workers and polling agents will be held in Jammu.” He said “the party expects that the Assembly poll may be held somewhere in April and hence every other party has already started the campaign.” Leader of Panthers Party in the state Assembly,Mr Harsh Dev Singh said “since September-October 2008 will again be the month of Ramzan holding the poll in this season may not be possible.” He said that the Government may not venture to upset the tourist season by holding the election between May and September and indications were that April was being considered suitable for the poll.” We have decided to start our pre-poll campaign right now.” he added. What is surprising that both the BJP and the Panthers Party have decided to field candidates in the Kashmir valley but 37 seats in the Jammu region will be the focus of their attention. |
