Fasting and feeling hungry. Be prepared to spend more to satiate your hunger. With the onset of the festival season the prices of different varieties of fruits and other vegetables have suddenly gone up. Rough estimates suggest that with the start of Navratra and eid-ul-fitr celebrations the city markets are witnessing 10 per cent rise in prices of fruit and other vegetable products. Besides this whole range of packed food products (consumed by fasting people) available across the city shops are costing dearer than compared to regular food items.
“These days more and more people are fasting during Navratras and prefer consuming fruit products than anything else and it is for this reason the demand goes up". "We are selling fresh fruits at a higher price as compared to previous weeks, a fruit vendor in Gandhi Nagar area said. Last week we were selling dozen bananas at a price of Rs 30 per dozen but now the price varies between Rs 35-40 per dozen. Similarly, price of one kg apples has also gone up from Rs 25 to Rs 30-40.
Other fruits such as papaya, pear and other varieties are costing more than previous weeks. Sushma Sharma said, all the five members in her house are fasting. She said when we go out to purchase fresh fruit they think twice as prices of fruits have gone up. The demand for potatoes, staple diet among those fasting during Navrata is also witnessing steep rise and hence its prices are also soaring. "We are selling Potato at Rs 18 per kg.The prices of few other items such as cheese and curd, though remain the same but owing to increasing demand and start of wedding season majority of consumers are not able to get desired supplies. In addition availability of dairy products at fair prices is also becoming cause of concern for consumers. The milk suppliers have decided to raise the price of raw milk whereas cheese corners are feeling the pinch as the state government has announced fixed prices and is not listening to their demand for negotiating the new price.
