JAMMU August 19- Governor Lt. Gen (Retd,.) S. K. Sinha today said that the proposed state of the art Cancer Institute in Katra will grow into a Medical College and form a part of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in Jammu & Kashmir. Addressing the 9th meeting of the Executive Council of SMVD University at the campus here this morning, the Governor described the University as the flagship of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, saying it is all set to emerge as an institution of excellence of International standards. He said the Cancer Institute will first be upgraded as Institute of Medical Excellence before growing into a Medical College. A beginning, he said, has already started with the passing out of the first batch, which registered a splendid 100 percent placement in the corporate sector. This odyssey will continue with the dynamic control of the Vice Chancellor and dedicated efforts of faculty and the staff. He said the students are privileged to have the congenial atmosphere in the serene ambience of the campus in the lap of the Mata. He said the increase in the number of students from across the country goes well with the high standards laid down for imparting quality technical education. The AICTE has approved various graduate courses and the University is first in the state to offer B. Architecture, Gen Sinha said. The Governor referred to the infrastructual development of the University and said that since 2003, a significant progress has been registered on this front. While the buildings for various disciplines are coming up at a speedy pace, the state of the art auditorium is also in its final stage. He hoped that the first convocation of the University will be held in the newly constructed magnificent auditorium early next year. He said that he has remained associated with the University from the day one and is satisfied with the speed with which the things are moving on. He also called for expedition landscaping of the campus, saying that it should blend with the surroundings. Expert guidance is being sought in this regard, he added. While appreciating the academic odyssey of the University, General Sinha called for giving due attention and fillip to sports and extra curricular activities. Elaborating on the Cancer Institute, the Governor said it will cater to the medicare of the needy, not only in this state but the neighboring states as well. 'The Cancer Institute and the SMVDU have a great role and social responsibility ahead', the Governor added. Speaking on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor Prof. N. K. Bansal gave a detailed presentation on the University profile, saying that work is on different stages on various blocks coming up in the campus. In all, 105338 square meter building have been planned for the University, he maintained. On academic front, the Vice Chancellor said that a well beginning has been made and nine fold increase registered since 2004. He exuded confidence that the roll may go up to 1800 by the year 2009. The Vice Chancellor said that the University has started three new courses from this academic session which include Master in Business Economics, B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering and B. Arch. The AICTE approval has been received for various engineering and management courses, which include Computer Science Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering besides MBA, he said. The council discussed various issues for further strengthening and improving the functioning of the University. Those who attended the meeting included Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof Abdul Wahid Qureshi, Principle Secretary to Governor, Dr. Arun Kumar, Mr. R. S. Pawar, Chairman, NIIT Ltd., Prof. V. S. Raju and others. Earlier the Governor introduced the new Registrar of the University, Col. (Retd.) D. K. Kapur, to the Council.
