| Wattali for strict enforcement of traffic laws | | Vigorous drive against traffic violators, 800 vehicles challaned | | Munish Gupta Jammu | Oct 13 To check the growing incidence of traffic violations, the Traffic Department, has launched a vigorous drive in the city of temples and booked nearly 800 vehicles on the first day of its drive. The drive launched under the direct supervision of SP Traffic Shafqat Wattali checked hundreds of vehicles at special nakas laid at different places in the city including Kachi Chawni, Dogra Hall, Ambphalla and Bikram Chowk. Till the last reports, the traffic team had challaned about 750 violators. Talking to Early Times correspondent, Wattali admitted frequent traffic jams due to the narrow roads, un-authorized parking of vehicles and heavy increase in the number of vehicles. He said the shortage of staff also leads to the growing incidence of traffic violations. However, he expressed his optimism to over come this problem adding that the department has been reactivated to meet this growing challenge. He said traffic rules would be enforced more strictly and any body found violating these rules would have to face the brunt. Expressing his deep concern at the traffic chaos in the city, he said the department was earnest about removing traffic-related problems and stressed the need for better infrastructure to improve the smooth functioning of traffic. As the roads of Jammu city are very congested and the number of vehicles has gone up considerably, frequent traffic jams are witnessed, besides the encroachments on the roads were the main cause of traffic chaos and sought the assistance and cooperation of the Deputy Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation and MLAs for making a joint effort in streamlining the traffic system and help in removal of encroachments.. He said emphasis are also being laid on use of seat belts and wearing helmets, besides creating awareness about the ill effects of use of cell phones while driving. He said whenever a traffic cop challans traffic violators it leads to unnecessary arguments which needed to be avoided adding this can be done only through proper education and making people aware about the traffic rules and norms. He said that despite the shortage of staff, the Department was making every effort to enforce the traffic rules and made it clear that no rule or law could be implemented unless people in general cooperate with the authorities. It is the abundant duty of one and all to abide by the traffic rules and at the same time warned that those found violating these rules would be dealt with sternly. Wattali further, said: ‘‘the police will encourage active participation of the public in controlling and prevention of traffic snarls occurring at several points in the city’’ adding there was a move to shift more policemen to the traffic wing. |
