| Top LeT militant killed in encounter | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Oct 13 Security forces shot dead a self-styled battalion commander of Lashkar-E-Toiba (LET) in Handwara area of Kupwara district on Saturday, police said. On a tip-off police, assisted by 30 Rashtriya Rifles, launched an operation at Shatagund Payeen in Handwara which was followed by an encounter in which one self-styled battalion commander of LeT was eliminated, superintendent of police Hasseb Mughal said. The slain commander identified as Faisal alias Abu Osama of Pakistan provided logistic support to the militant organizations and sent infiltrating militants to Rajwar, Mawar, Kandi, Natnusa and Qaziabad areas of North Kashmir, Mughal added. One AK-47 alongwith three magazines, 14 rounds, four hand grenades and one pouch were recovered from the site of the encounter. This is the first incident of militancy related violence in the valley since the United Jehad Council (UJC), a 13-member conglomerate of militant outfits, announced a three-day unilateral ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir which began on Friday. |
