In a do-or-die encounter, India defeated Afghanistan by 1-0 at AOC Ground. HAV N GURUILAL scored the loan goal for India at the 5th minute. Apart from India, the other countries who entered the quarterfinals are Cameroon, Korea, Egypt, Guinea, Brazil, Qatar, and Ireland. The quarterfinal matches would be played from 16th October onwards at AOC and 1 EME grounds. In a one-sided match at 1 EME ground, tournament favourites Egypt beat Ireland 7-0. A Bassyonia of Egypt netted 2 goals. He is the maximum goal scorer in the tournament so far are with 5 goals in 2 matches. Another favourites Qatar stunned Brazil by 3-1 at 1 EME ground. ANAS NASIR opened account for Qatar at 7th minute followed by ABDULQADIR ILYAS (67th minute) and MOUSSA ALBARAKA (77th minute). A MARCUS scored the only goal for Brazil at 78th minute. At MCME ground Guinea Republic defeated Canada by 4-0. In a well contested first half both teams could not convert good moves into a goal. In the 53rd minute, a beautiful header by M Mara of Guinea Republic floated into the Canadian goal. Three minutes later Bangura dribbled past the Canadian defence and shot a powerful right footer to which the Canadian custodian N Stankov had no answer. In the 72nd minute Soumah made no mistake in pushing the ball in from a cross he got from M Mara to take the tally up to 3-0. With barely 9 minutes to go, O Koulibaly was fouled by the Canadian custodian N Stankov in the goal area for which he was shown a red card and a penalty awarded to the Guineans. IS Conte made no mistake in increasing the tally to 4-0. Korea beat Germany by 3-1 at MCME ground. A tackle in the 24th minute by the German midfielder A Muller earned him a yellow card. Women football league matches started today with Korea beating USA 4-0. U RI (28th minute), K RI (41) and Y KIM (61 and 87th minute) scored for Korea. In another match at Artillery grounds, Netherlands defeated Canada 4-0. TROMP LEONI (20), WMR1 M KELLY (53), NICOLLE TUEL (88) and WMR1 K JUDITH (90th minute) scored for Netherlands. Tomorrow, Germany women’s football team will face USA and Netherlands will take on France. |
