| Selected for Asian Games, gymnasts call on Sports Minister | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 16 Two aerobics gymnasts from Jammu and Kashmir, who are part of the nine-member Indian gymnastics team going to take part in the 2nd Indoor Asian Games at Macao, called on the Minister of State for Sports Babu Singh here today. Minister was highly appreciable of the achievements of international gymnasts, Manpreet Kour and Manvinder Singh and wished them success in the Asian Games. Earlier, apprising the minister of distinct achievements of these state gymnasts, senior gymnastic coach, S P Singh said that both Manpreet and Manvinder have represented the country in the international events on earlier occasions as well. While Manvinder has participated twice in the world championship and once in the World Cup Series, Manpreet was part of the Indian team that took part in the World Series last year at Bangkok. Manpreet was selected for the Indoor Asian Games on the basis of her senior national gold in aerobics this year. She has also won a gold medal in mixed pair event with Manvinder in the same national meet held at Rajkot in Gujarat. S P Singh, who is also accompanying the Indian team as coach disclosed that earlier there were four selections from Jammu and Kashmir but after short listing by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Union Ministry of Sports, Kamal Singh and Jaskaran Singh were dropped. The Indian contingent shall leave from Delhi for the venue on October 24 for the Games which are scheduled to start from October 26. In all, India is taking part in 19 events including Aerobic gymnastics, kick boxing, indoor cycling, indoor hockey, chess, car sports, dance sports, dragon and line, indoor athletics, kabaddi, swimming 25 mts, electronic sports and extreme sports. Later, speaking to the participants Minister said that the government is making all out efforts to make sports popular among the masses because unless and until it (sports) becomes a mass movement the desired results cannot be achieved. When asked why there is delay in handing over award of Rs one lakh cheque to `Wonder Girl’ Mitali as promised by the Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Babu Singh said that the cheque is ready and would be handed over to Mitali shortly. |
