| J&K converted into an Islamic State, alleges Hari Om | | | JAMMU AUG-19- Taking strong exception of the contents of the notice of the Custodian General as published in several local dailies, BJP Vice President and spokesperson Prof Hari Om has alleged that Jammu and Kashmir has been converted into an Islamic state and was heading for ‘Shariat law’. In a strongly worded statement Prof Hari Om has posed several questions as to when the ruling coalition in Jammu has said good- bye to the secular India and secular constitutional framework and converted Jammu and Kashmir into an Islamic State. ‘Has the Congress led coalition government decided to govern the State as per the ‘Shariat laws’. Asserting that the answer to both these questions has to be yes as is clear from the Custodian General’s Notice of August 14, which reads among other things as ‘ A duty has been cast upon the authorities (Custodian General) to protect the evacuee property and also restrain people from illegal transfer of such property which is forbidden by the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir State Evacuees’ (Administration of Property) Act and sinful as per Shariat Law’. A cursory look at the said notice, Hari Om said, would be enough to conclude that the state government has been seeking to negate the secular laws and the civil procedure code and replace the same with the Shariat laws and pointed out that this is not the first time that the Congress led government has attempted to de-secularize the state polity. Alleging that the new dispensation has been doing this with single-minded devotion ever since November 2,2005,Prof Hari Om in this connection referred to 2006 Jammu and Kashmir Bank’s Calendar, diary and the booklet entitled ‘The city of Srinagar ’which only highlight the Valley and the Islamic culture. The BJP spokesperson has asked the Congress to clarify its position in this regard forthwith as any failure on its part would mean that it is a party to the on-going process of de-secularization of the state polity and the society. Asserting that people of the state especially the minorities including Hindu community are keenly watching the State Government, the BJP spokesperson warned of serious consequences if this trend is not reserved and put to halt at the earliest.
