| PDP leadership hopes Qazi to get back forest portfolio | | | Early Times Reporter

The PDP leadership expects Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad,to restore the forest portfolio to Qazi Mohd.Afzal who had resigned from the cabinet in protest against divesting him of the portfolio.
A senior PDP leader,Mr Ghulam Hassan Mir,said today “I believe that Mr Azad may restore the forest portfolio to Qazi Afzal.”Mr Mir has two reasons for this.First,Chief Minister himself had conveyed to Qazi Afzal,in writing,that the forest portfolio would be restored to him after the mess in the Department and the Forest Corporation was removed.The PDP leader said that Mr Azad had constituted an official team to probe into the scams of various nature in the Forest Department and the corporation and the probe report has already been submitted to the Chief Minister.In addition to this couple of officials in the Corporation have been suspended and a case has been filed against one by the police.He said that when the process of clearing the mess has been completed there should be no difficulty for the Chief Minister in restoring the forest portfolio to the Qazi.
Secondly,the PDP patron,in his letter to Mr Azad’s lcommunication,had told the Chief Chief Minister that the onus of resolving the conflict over the Qazi issue had been his (Azad’s) creation and as such he should resolve it.This letter had placed the Chief Minister in a quandary.If Mr Azad does not restore the forest portfolio to the Qazi it may threaten the coalition with instant rupture.The Chief Minister should have no difficulty in handing over the snatched portfolio to the Qazi because the commitment he had made in his letter has been fulfilled.Mr Azad had conveyed to the Qazi that the forest portfolio would be restored to him after clearing cerrain cobwebs in the corporation.
Even some Congress leaders,wishing not to be quoted,said that if Mr Azad restored the forest portfolio to the Qazi his stature will grow.They said that once the Qazi was back in the cabinet it would cause embarrassment to those in the PDP who wish him to be thrown out and want the crisis with the Congress to increase. |
