| Lack of manpower in GMC affecting hospital waste management Prog. | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 16 Though the internal premises of Govt Medical College (GMC) Jammu seem to be well maintained ,clean and tidy but when it comes to managing bio medical waste lack of manpower, equipment and will power is adversely affecting the cleanliness drive and posing health hazards. A visit to the GMC backyard where the Jammu's elitist hospital dumps its waste material exposes tall claims of the authorities responsible for keeping the area clean and free of spread of infectious diseases. Bio medical waste material and garbage lying outside the garbage boxes, dogs tasting and eating the wastes is a common sight and may result in the transmitting diseases, large number of doctors working in the hospital said. Dr Satish.k.khajuria,Deputy medical.supdt GMC said though they have large number of sweepers army but they are not sufficient. Theyare doing their job with full sincerity but sometimes street children from near by slum dwellings come after crossing the walls in search of garbage that can be useful and they can sold for Rs 5 to 10 .He said stray some dogs are also responsible for the mess. He added that the GMC is facing acute shortage of the sweepers as per the norms and said that there were around 600-700 patient beds that are always in use and around 2-2.5kg of human waste is generated from each bed in a day and around 1250-1350kgs of total waste that is generated in a day out of which 15%-20%is the infectious waste that is being collected and thrown in the yellow coloured dustbins and the rest is thrown in the black coloured dustbins that are being carried to the backside of the GMC with the help of the wheelbarrow to throw the non infectious wastes in the municipality garbage boxes .Waste material from some other hospitals are also being brought to GMC due to lack of incinerators in those hospitals. He added however the urine bags are mutilated as it contains hypochloride solution that may form harmful gases such as diaxohns and pheurons which are carcinogenic gases and may cause cancer.he added that the incinerator that is being used at present will be shortly upgraded to get the latest facility and if required will be replaced. Referring to precautions he replied that the universal precautions are being taken ,the sweepers are given special training so that they ar enot exposed to body fluids and secreations,gloves are used,gum shoes,mask and plastic apron is used and the sweepers are dually trained for it.' He said they have forwarded propasals to the health department to look into the matter. As far as the budget is concerned deputy supdt said that there is not any special budget being given for the cleanliness and sanitation but they manage to circulate it out of the general funds. He also requested the people to use the toilets properly in the hospital,to avoid spitting of pan,tobacco and also avoid use of polythene bags in the hospital so as to help them in maintaining cleanliness and also requested the govt. to look into the matter of shortage of staff of sweepers so that a much better service is given to the attendants and patients. |
