The Government Medical College has today claimed going hitech with computerization of Out Patient Department (OPD) –but so what if in one of its associated hospitals one child dies every third day –on an average –due to lack of sufficient manpower and infrastructure.
The SMGS Hospital, which is an associated hospital of Government Medical College Jammu, is the only state run advanced gynecological facility in Jammu but due to heavy rush of patients and poor availability of staff and dismal infrastructure the hospital is a worst nightmare for the patients.
Just imagine there are hardly 22 trained gynecologists in the SMGS Hospital including not more than half a dozen senior doctors. Interestingly, on an average there are at least 20 deliveries by operation every day. Therefore, through out the 24 hours, there is almost at least one operation every hour. Other way round, one can say each doctor has to perform at least one operation every day which, however, is not a possibility as the junior doctors often spoil the case if the caesarian is not performed in under direct supervision of the seniors.
The net result is one death in the neonatal ward –the post delivery station –almost every third day. In past nine months alone 155 deaths of infants, neonates and children in the paediatrics department while three deaths of women have been reported in the gynaecology and obstetrics department.
The rush in the gynecological department of the SMGS Hospital is so huge that on a daily average there are at least 60 deliveries. This means that every single hour two to three women are delivered of babies in the hospital which has only 22 doctors handling the cases. This again implies that each doctor has to supervise around three cases of deliveries on a daily average. With this work load on doctors, one can imagine the stability of their performance and safety of the patients.
The 550-bedded hospital, on an average, has 800 to 1,000 indoor patients on any given day. Bursting at the seams because of the huge influx of patients including complicated referrals from various districts, attendants quite often level allegations of negligence on the part of doctors whenever a patient dies. However, the root cause of the problem is the acute shortage of staff including doctors and paramedics in relation to the heavy influx of patients including complicated cases.
The problem is more perverse ion the 45-bedded labour room of the hospital where shortage of staff and influx of patients have sandwiched doctors and paramedics. According to several eyewitness accounts, the morning shift in the labour room goes off smoothly because in case of any emergency, the hospital authorities divert gynaecologists from OPD, research and other engagements. However, during night hours, the hospital has only one Registrar, four PGs, four to five house surgeons, four to five in-terns and one consultant on call.
Again, one can imagine the condition of a single Registrar, who has to attend to 25 to 30 deliveries including caesareans. Interestingly, the regional bias is not missing even the hospitals where the difference between life and death is wafer thin, The SMGS hospital has six posts of Registrars but Lal Ded Hospital in Srinagar having the same workload like the SMGS, has 22 Registrars.
