| Similarity – ‘No to early polls’; Variation – reasoning | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 17 Both the PDP and the Panthers Party feel that the chances for holding early Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir have further receded. And for this the two organizations have different reasons. The Panthers leadership believe that the coalition was harbouring fears about going to the polls five to six months earlier than the schedule because both the Congress and the PDP have nothing in their kitty for going to the people. A senior party leader, Harsh Dev Singh, said today “I do not feel any possibility of early poll because the coalition parties have nothing to offer to the people.” He said “the congress and the PDP will hold on to the chair till the stipulated time.” Against this the PDP leader, Ghulam Hassan Mir stated, “I do not find any need for holding an early poll.” He explained that the month of Ramzan, a period of fasts, will end next year in the first week of October and the polls could be held by the end of October 2008.He said that once it was decided to hold the election towards the end of October 2008 it could give adequate time for political parties for campaigning. In reply to a question whether early poll could end the present political uncertainty Mir said “you cannot expect uncertainty to end even if elections were held earlier than the schedule.” He explained that the ongoing security scenario and the possibility of having a coalition Government after the next election will not allow uncertainty to end. However, Harsh Dev said that it was not feasible for the Government to order early poll because it had “failed on all fronts. “When a Government is able to spend Rs.1000 crores out of the financial allocation of Rs.5,000 crores it speaks volumes about nonperformance of the ruling coalition,” he said and added, “With such a “slur on its face the Government may not venture to seek fresh mandate from the people.” He was happy that nonperformance and the ongoing conflict between the Congress and the PDP had “reduced burden on our shoulders.” “We need not campaign vigorously because people have,by now realized, that the both the PDP-Congress coalition and National Conference Governments have failed to deliver the goods,”he stated. |
