Mufti asks centre to act on troop cut
10/17/2007 8:26:18 PM

Srinagar | Oct 17
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said the State Government must assume its full role in revitalizing and pushing forward the sagging peace process to rebuild the people's confidence in it. "Dismal movement forward on the J&K-specific confidence building measures including facilitating free movement of people and goods across the LoC, has raised serious doubts in the public domain over the viability of the whole process," he said.
Addressing PDP functionaries including ministers, legislators and office-bearers here today, Sayeed said the Jammu & Kashmir Government has an extremely crucial role to play in representing the aspirations of the people and building consensus over the resolution of the State's political and economic problems. He said the position of the State and its elected Government in the constitutional system of the country is unique and this has to reflect in its functioning. "J&K Government is not a glorified local bodies administration but it has the mandate to channelize the public sentiment along positive and fruitful lines for the peaceful resolution of the State's problems," he said and added that there could be no progress on the peace and reconciliation front unless the State Government flags the process with resolve and political courage.
Making it clear that the centre must now take a decision on the recommendations of the committees constituted to look into the PDP's demand for reduction of troops and revocation of AFSPA, Sayeed said while his party extended unflinching support to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh in the constitution and functioning of the mechanism for the purpose, ironically, there has been no movement forward on the issue even after the submission of report by the concerned committees. "I think the decision must be now taken on the issue without any further delay as initiating the process of troop reduction and revocation of AFSPA is in the interest of peace," he said and added that the conflicting statements from various quarters on the issue is adding to the confusion.
