| ‘J&K fared well in SSA, MDMS implementation’ | | Centre to set up 51 KGAVs in J&K: Fatmi | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Oct 17 In an effort to reach out to the children rendered orphan due to the turmoil in the state, Union Minister of State for HRD, Mr. MAA Fatmi today announced the setting up of 51 Kasturba Gandhi Awasi Vidyalayas (KGAVs) in Jammu and Kashmir on the line and pattern of Kendriya Vidyalays. Interacting with media on the sidelines of IInd All India Editors Conference on Social Sector here this afternoon, the Minister said the aim of setting up these Vidyalayas is to retain these children in the educational chain who otherwise cannot afford the same. He said these Vidyalayas would be providing free education, books, stay etc. to these children. The Minister said knowing the difficult circumstances the state has been in, centre would be providing all possible assistance to the state in this connection. He said already under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan(SSA) and Mid Day Meal Scheme(MDMS) free education and food is provided to poor and destitute children who cannot afford it otherwise. Also, he said, central government is providing assistance to 128 educationally backward districts in the country. He said Jammu and Kashmir has fared well in the execution of these schemes and in a recent nation wide survey the state was placed at 16th place in the execution of SSA and MDMS. On the performance of SSA and MDMS Mr. Fatmi said the thrust has been on quality improvement and within two years quality improvement in these two schemes would be ensured so that by 2010 these schemes are launched on a regular basis. He said since the launch of these schemes the retention rate in the schools has been increased considerably. He said as against an enrollment of 53 percent in 2003-04, the enrollment for 2005-06 stood at 71 percent. He said part time schools like madrasa, partshalas etc are also covered under the scheme if these schools wish so. He said under the Alternative and Innovative Education Scheme these schools are provided free books, free food, dues of teachers etc and other expenses. The Minister said from October 2007 MDMS has been extended to 3479 educationally backward blocks in the country which will cover 1.70 crore children and the programme will be extended to all areas across the country from 2008-09. |
