| Thousands participate in ‘Stand up and Speak out’ event | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 17 Thousands of students, scholars, teachers and others besides national service scheme volunteers from the universities in Jammu and Srinagar and affiliated colleges today joined the ‘Stand up and Speak out’ campaign at different venues around the state to express solidarity with the rest of the world for their concern against growing poverty in the world. The Millennium Campaign is an interagency initiative of the United Nations that supports citizens' efforts to hold their governments to accountable for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Working in more than 30 countries, both rich and poor, the campaign partners with a wide range of people at the international and local level to inspire grassroots movement toward the achievement of the goals. As a part of the campaign, Lawrence Public School also organized the event here. Joint Director Information, S.K Sharma was the chief guest. On the occasion, an oath ceremony was organized wherein more than 200 students participated and pledged to stand up against poverty to achieve the millennium development goals which include to eradicate extreme poverty, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development. |
