| Bhaskar Gupta: emerging prospect in Taekwondo for state | | | VIKAS SHARMA Sports in J&K has been gaining impetus over the last few years which is an encouraging sign for the upliftment of standard of sports in the state. As a result, many national sports events were conducted in the disciplines of Table Tennis, Korfball and hockey there by providing the much needed exposure to the young and budding players of the state who have the caliber and the skill to prove their worth at high levels in their respective disciplines. Taekwondo is one such game which is slowly but steadily strengthening its position in the state. Many new comers are joining Taekwondo in the stadium. Many Taekwondo players have brought laurels for the state with their commendable performance in various national and international events. Kuldeep Handoo is one such player who with his hard work and determination made the state proud by winning silver medal for India in International Wu-Shu Championship held at Vietnam. Now, he achieved a rare feat by becoming the first player from the J&K state to be selected as coach of the National Wu- Shu team few days back. 7 year old Bhaskar Gupta is also one of the promising prospect in Taekwondo for the state. Son of Rajesh Gupta (Auto Driver by profession) Bhaskar studying in 3rd standard at Jain Higher Secondary School has all the attributes for becoming a future champion. He has taken part in almost all district and state Taekwondo Championships held in the state ever since he started playing taekwondo. In Jan 2002, and he first participated in the Jammu District Wu-Shu Championship and that too by by winning Silver Medal in U/4 age group. He was just 4. From there on, he never looked back and improved his performance with every new championship. Year 2003 and 2004 were the most happening years for Bhaskar performed quite outstandingly in the both Jammu District and J&K State Taekwondo championships by winning gold medals . He again struck by sweeping two gold medals in Jammu District Taekwondo Championship and J&K State Taekwondo Championship in the year 2005. Bhaskar also prove his mettle outside the state by winning gold medal in Sub Junior Taekwondo Championship held at Skating Rink Sector 10 Chandigarh on January 14-15 2006. He also participated in the 4th Sub Junior Wu-Shu Championship held at Bhopal (M.P) on June 2004 and 1st National Sub Junior Poomase Championship held at mini stadium Rajajipuram Lucknow in the same year. He is younger of his two sisters namely Varsha Gupta and Saloni Gupta. Tara Gupta Retired Staff nurse grandmother of Bhaskar has the credit to explore the hidden sports person present in Bhaskar as he watched the activities of his grandson very carefully. It was she who advised his son Rakesh (Bhaskar’s Father) to admit Bhaskar in the stadium. Puneeta Gupta Bhaskar’s mother (house wife) while speaking to “Early Times” said “ Every mother wants his son to achieve success in his life be it in sports, studies or any other profession. Bhaskar is very energetic and intelligent as he has this amazing ability to pick things very quickly and that is where he has advantage over other players of his age group.”
