| JKLI expeditionary force received at Delhi | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 19 General Deepak Kapoor, Chief of Army Staff in presence of Lieutenant General PR Gangadharan, Colonel of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment and Mr Pawan Munjal, Managing Director, Hero Honda and Mr RS Settia, DGM of Indian Oil Corporation, flagged in the JAK LI mountaineering expedition to mount nun and Imphal – Siachen – New Delhi Motor Cycle Expedition’ in New Delhi. The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment, an illustrious Regiment of the Indian Army is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee this year. To mark the occasion the Regiment undertook a Mountaineering Expedition to Mount Nun, 7135 mtr and a Motor Cycle Expedition from Imphal to New Delhi via Siachen (Base Camp). The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment was raised on 15 April 1948, out of volunteers who took up arms to defend their motherland. The volunteers were subsequently organized into a Militia Force of fourteen battalions. The gallantry of the Militia Force was recognized by the Nation by redesignating it as “The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry” in 1972. Mount Nun is an extremely hazardous and difficult peak which has challenged climbers over the yrs. The expedition led by Col Vinay Khosla braved bad weather and vagaries of the terrain to successfully summit the peak on 15 September 2007 under Major Randeep Singh. Two subsequent attempts led by Colonel Vinay Khosla, the expedition leader and Major Amit Soni created a record ascent by having 20 mountaineers summit the peak. The Regiment and the Red Shield Division undertook a Motor Cycle Expedition from Imphal to New Delhi via Siachen Base Camp. A distance of over 8000 Kms across the breadth of the country covering 12 states involved crossing of three passes; Rohtang 13360 ft, Tanglang-La 15055 ft, Khardung-La 18380 ft and Zoji-La 12535 ft. The aim of the expedition was to promote the spirit of adventure and to spread the theme of national integration, peace and harmony as the Indian Army and JAK LI Regiment is known to be the epitome of ‘National Integration’. The expedition was supported by Hero Honda and Indian Oil Corporation. Gen Deepak Kapoor lauded the achievements of the Regiment for being one of the most decorated Regiments of the Indian Army post independence having been awarded four Battle Honours, three Theatre Honours, six Unit Citations, a Param Vir Chakra, two Ashok Chakras and a large number of other gallantry awards. He also congratulated both the expeditions and their leaders on their outstanding feat, said a PIB (Defence Wing) release. |
