| Srinagar boys seems confident in snooker | | 17th state billiards and snooker championships begin today | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 19 Because of their strength the cueists from Srinagar seem confident to dominate in snooker in the 17th State Billiards and Snooker Championships starting from tomorrow at Billiards Hall, M A Stadium, here. Last year both the titles were clinched by the Srinagar boys. While Younis Kuchey had won the junior snooker title, the senior trophy was claimed by Umar Farooq beating Ashok Raphel, an army man who is no more in the fray this time. Meanwhile, the last year junior snooker title winner, Younis Kuchey has become senior resulting into Nikhil Kapahi getting the top seed. In senior group, the boys from Srinagar have their upper edge with defending champion, Umar Farooq being joined by Younis Kuchey in their campaign for the top position. In the meantime, three promising boys from Jammu, Kuldeep Sharma, Sumesh Turki, Pallav Gupta have become seniors, so the Jammu district is relying on Nikhil, Ishuk Choudhary and Ishan Choudhary in the junior snooker competitions, said general secretary of the J&K Billiards and Snooker Association, Sheetal Gandotra. In all, 12 boys are expected to contest from district Srinagar in the junior snooker competitions starting tomorrow. “Majority of the Srinagar boys play snooker only which helped them in creating an edge over their counterparts from Jammu,” said the secretary adding, “Jammu boys are comparatively better in billiards because they practice both versions of the game.” Over a fortnight long competitions will start tomorrow with junior snooker competitions, followed by the senior snooker and then billiards. |
