Jhangar (LoC) | Oct 19
The beginning of Dussehra celebrations at the Line of Control here not turned high profile but also romantic and ecstatic as the heart rolling singer was the state's Governor.
'Janu Paryo, Kashmeer ko dhavayma'…' (We have to go to Kashmir) an old Nepalese song sung by Governor Lt. Gen (Retd) Sriniwas Kumar Sinha set the tone for this year's 4-day Dussehra celebrations at 3/5 Gorkha Rifles Battalion Headquarters at Jhangar, near LOC, a bowl shaped valley nestled in the lap of pine-clad dense forests this afternoon.
Wrapping up the musical bonanza by young Gorkha recruits, the Governor had the final say at his parent battalion, which reverberated the serene atmosphere with officers and jawans clapping on the melodious Gorkha traditional tunes sung by General Sinha.
Earlier, the Governor addressed the troops deployed along the Line of Control and conveyed his best wishes to all ranks and appreciated the devotion to duty of the Armed Forces in very difficult conditions. He recalled his golden years of 40 year's Army. He joined this battalion 50 years ago as a young officer and after being on its rolls for 20 years had commanded this battalion in Ladakh for three years during mid 60s. He said that the Armed Forces have always been an epicenter of dedication and selfless service in the Indian Nation. In chaste Nepalese language, he urged the troops to strive for excellence and add luster to the glorious traditions of the battalion.
General Sinha greeted the troops on Dussehra, the festival of triumph of virtue over evil and prayed for peace and tranquility in the State.
After addressing the Sainik Samelen, the Governor witnessed a variety entertainment programme presented by the Gorkha Battalion, celebrating the festival as Dassian. The 15-days of celebration and merry making occurs during the bright lunar fortnight culminating on the day of the full moon. The main celebration glorifies the triumph of good over evil, which is symbolized by Godess Durga slaying the terrible demon Mahisasur, who terrorized the earth in the guise of water buffalo. The fervour starts building up from the first ceremony of Ghataqsthapana and numerous rituals are observed till the 7th day when the ceremony of Fhulpati is held. The celebrations reach their zenith on Mahaashtami and Navami, which culminate on Dushami or Dussehra..
The Battalion Commander, Col. Venu Gopal greeted the Governor on the occasion. Incidentally, Col Gopal is the son of a former Commanding Officer of the battalion who alongwith the battalion had served under the Governor when the latter was GOC of the Divison.
