| Mehbooba welcomes finalization of goods for cross-LoC trade | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Oct 20 – Welcoming the reported finalization of items by New Delhi and Islamabad for trade across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu & Kashmir, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti has asked both the Governments to facilitate the much-awaited movement of trucks on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad at the earliest. "I think there should be now no problem in allowing movement of goods on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road," she said. In a statement issued here today, Ms Mufti said after the reopening of Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road for the divided families, the people of Jammu & Kashmir were eagerly looking ahead for free movement of people and goods on this historic road. She said such a step would be a key confidence building measure for the people of the State. "The initiative must not be restricted to Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road alone, but all the traditional routes including the Suchetgarh-Sialkote, Kargil-Skardu, Bandipora-Gurez-Gilgit, Nowshehra-Mirpur and Poonch-Rawalakote roads must be thrown open for free movement of people and goods," she said. Ms Mufti said the export of products like carpets, furniture, silk, fruits, spices, aromatic plants, pulses, saffron and Basmati rice through LoC, as have been reportedly cleared by Islamabad would contribute immensely to the economic growth of the State. "I am sure with the passage of time more items would be added to the list," she said. Ms Mufti said Jammu & Kashmir's past is a vivid version of today's Free Trade Zone which was unfortunately degenerated into a dead end following the 1947 upheaval. She said PDP's vision of a politically stable and economically vibrant Jammu & Kashmir is founded primarily on the liberty of its people to travel in the global village with no restrictions on the immediate neighborhood. "In its ultimate form of liberalization, we would like a bus ticket to serve as the passport and visa to travel into any part of the erstwhile State and beyond," she said and added that to this liberty to travel is linked the economic future of the State in a significant measure. Ms Mufti said the removal of restrictions on travel for the people of the State in their neighborhood would significantly remove the restrictions on our economic growth as is happening in all other parts of the world which are witnessing phenomenal progress even in the countries around us. |
