A militant and a cop were killed, while another police personal was injured in a fierce encounter in Sopore area of Baramulla district, this afternoon.
A spokesman of Jammu and Kashmir police said that a militant and a cop were killed in a gun-battle that erupted between police and militants at Malpora in Sopore.
DIG Baramulla, Dr B Srinivas said that police received specific information regarding presence of militants at village Malmapan Pora in Sopore. Acting on this information an operation was launched by Sopore Police during which militants fired upon the police party, he added.
He said that in the ensuing gun fight one militant was eliminated by the Police. However, two Policemen also received injuries in the encounter out of whom one succumbed to his injuries.
The slain militant has been identified as Abdullah of Pakistan, while the deceased cop was identified as Mushtaq Ahmed.
Some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the site of the encounter, sources added. The operation was in progress, when the last report came in.
A caller identifying himself as Dr Abdullah Gaznavi, spokesman of Lashkar-e-Toiba, told a state based news agency that the militant killed in the encounter was Abu Abdullah Jaish.
Claiming to have inflicted heavy causalities on Special Operation Group (SOG) the caller said that the slain militant had laid an ambush in the village which led to the killing of four SOG personnel including two inspectors.
