| Govt stands behind Police like Himalaya: Azad | | Gives cent per cent marks to JKP for valour, commitment | | Early Times Repoorter Srinagar | Oct 21 Paying rich tributes to J&K Police personnel for offering supreme sacrifices in service of the Nation, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said State Police was as efficient and brave as any other police or para-military force in the country. Azad was addressing a function here today in connection with the Police Commemoration Day observed throughout the country today in memory of the 10 CRPF personnel who laid down their lives this day in 1959 at Hot Springs in Ladakh fighting Chinese incursion. The chief minister also announced increase in ration money for the JKP personnel and assured them that the government stood behind the J&K Police like the Himalaya. Former Chief Minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Chairman Legislative Council, Ghulam Nabi Lone, Deputy Speaker, Legislative Assembly, Muhammad Akbar Lone, Leader of the Opposition in State Assembly, A. R. Rather, ministers, legislators and senior officers of police and civil administration were present. "During the last 18 years, the valour and commitment with which the J&K Police has fought militancy and protected the lives and property of the civilian population has established that our Police personnel are not lagging behind in any manner their counterparts in other states and security forces in the country", the Chief Minister observed. The Chief Minister made a special mention of SHO Udhay Veer Singh and his son Dy. S. P., Shaily Singh both of whom laid down their lives one after the other in the highest tradition of service unto death. He said while the father was killed fighting militants in Nanak Nagar, Jammu, the son who joined the Police after his father's martyrdom, was killed fighting militants in Bhadarwah this year. He said when he visited the family to pay his respects to the fallen policeman his brave mother told him that she had two more sons to sacrifice for the country. He said brother of Shaily Singh has also joined the State Police to carry forward the family tradition of serving the country. He also cited instances of Dy. S. P., S. Sheetal Singh and his son, Dy. S. P, S. Jagtar Singh who died while fighting militants in Barmulla and Kathua, respectively. Likewise, he mentioned S. P., Nasir Ahmad and Dy. S. P., Ghulam Jeelani whose sons have taken on the mantle of their fathers following their death in action. The Chief Minister said that situation in Jammu & Kashmir was fast improving and gave full credit for it to police, para-military and army personnel who, he said, come from all parts of the country to defend its territorial integrity and protect the people of the State from anti-national forces. He said these personnel fight all odds and adversities and even lay down their lives for the cause. Recalling the sacrifices offered by the State Police during the past 18 years, Azad said that as many as 868 police personnel were killed, besides 447 SPOs and 128 VDC members. In Jammu & Kashmir, he said during the same period, 5099 police and security personnel were killed in action. About the last year between September 1, 2006 and August 31, 2007, he said 700 personnel of state police and para-military forces laid down their lives throughout the country while defending its sovereignty. This, he said, includes 68 personnel of J&K Police and 24 personnel of para-military forces who laid down their lives in Jammu & Kashmir. He paid rich tributes to the fallen police and security forces personnel for protecting the lives and honour of the people and the integrity of the country. He highlighted the need for welfare measures for the families of the police personnel who lay down their lives while performing their duty. He said government had taken several measures for the welfare of the families of police martyrs including grant of Rs. 6 lakh as special welfare relief out of Police Welfare Fund, Rs. 5 lakh as ex-gratia relief and Rs. 2.5 lakh under Janta Insurance Scheme. He said J&K Police is running two higher secondary schools, one each at Srinagar and Jammu, where free education was imparted to the children and dependents of police martyrs. The Chief Minister laid wreath on the memorial of the police personnel. Earlier in his address, the Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda read out the names of the 700 police and para-military personnel who laid down their lives during the last year. He said the J&K Police was a force to reckon with and efforts were on to further modernise and improve. He said the State police could be equated in efficiency, dedication and valour to any elite police force in the country. Khoda highlighted the measures taken for the welfare of children of police personnel who were killed in action. Apart from ex-gratia, relief and insurance money, he said scholarships were given to the children of the police martyrs. He said since the onset of militancy, 414 children of police martyrs were provided employment in the department. In addition, few hundred more, he said, were recruited in other civilian departments. He said the State Police has several gazetted and non-gazetted officers who were children or dependents of those police personnel who laid down their lives for the sake of the country. The DGP strongly advocated increase in the Ration Money for the police personnel. |
