| Probe sought in ‘multi-crore’ scam in sale of pharma licenses | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 22 After liberal distribution of licences for opening professional colleges and liquor shops in Jammu and Kashmir the multi-crore scam regarding registration of 10400 pharmacists in the state during the last four to five years has surfaced after the state Pharma Association today alleged that the licenses were issued without adhering to the established central norms. General secretary of the Association,Mr Rakesh Gupta, told media persons in Jammu that several thousand people, having no requisite qualification, had been registered as pharmacists in the state. He said that many among them had received the licence on the basis of fake certificates. Gupta alleged that those entrusted with the task of granting licences or registration had minted crores of rupees from the unqualified pharmacists who managed to get licences. He demanded a high level inquiry in the liberal “sale” of licences and registration of pharmacists and that too after the two former Drug controllers were placed under suspension. The Association leaders stated that those holding genuine certificates and having requisite qualification had been denied licences because they could not afford greasing the palm of the licence issuing authorities. He said by selling licenses the Government was playing with the lives of millions of people who continued to bank on medicines. They said that if the state Government did not take cognizance of the multi-crore scam “we will have no other alternative but to approach the Drug Controller of India and the court.” |
