Jammu | Oct 22
It is simply snake menace in the border belts of Akhnoor sector.Even the last Army check post at Panjtoot border has on display a snake-bite kit inside the sentry box.
When asked about the kit Army officials on duty told the KIP team that “since we kill two to three snakes a day we have to keep the kit for saving the lives of sliders or border farmers who may receive a snake bite.”
They said wherever one moves one could find snakes roaming in fields. At times even the cattle have fell victim of snake bites.
At the Naiwalla camp, where over 135 migrant families from Panjtoot,Gigrial and Pallanwala have been residing in tents and thatched huts, remain worried on account of snake menace.A 65-year old Dhani Devi said “we have plastered the premises in front of our tents and thatched huts with cow dung and lime to prevent snakes from entering our tents.”She said a number of camp dwellers were saved when soon after snake bite they were rushed to primary health centre for treatment.
Officials in a number of primary health centres and dispensaries confirmed that the use of anti-snake venom injections was higher in border belts of Akhnoor sector than in any other area of Jammu.
The camp dwellers, living in miserable conditions at Naiwalla as they could not return to their ancestral houses because their lands lie across the barbed wire fencing debarring them from carrying out any farming practices, said that their plea for opening a health centre close to the camp had not been conceded.
Government officials said that besides opening of a health centre other facilities would be provided after the migrants were given financial assistance to the tune of Rs.50,000 for constructing houses on a five-marla plots that were to be given to over 6000 families shortly.
