| Future of Lawn Tennis in J&K in doldrums | | Association set to lose its identity | | Vikas Sharma JAMMU | AUGust 20
The clouds of uncertainty are looming large over the future of Lawn Tennis in Jammu and Kashmir and the players are dejected and worried about their future due to the callous attitude and disinterest of the Jammu and Kashmir Lawn Tennis Association. Though the infrastructure required for the game, as also the players, are available in the state yet the Association has not risen to the occasion to organize any type of championship in the state ever since its inception. The Sports Council set up for the promotion of sports in the state has failed to appoint a permanent coach for the promotion of this favourite game and more so no efforts have been made to polish the available talent.. The Lawn Tennis Association, solely responsible for conducting the tennis tournaments in the state, seems to be a non-existent body as it has failed even to organize tournaments at tehsil or district level what to speak of state or national level tournaments. One really wonders what purpose does it serve to the state when it has not been able to conduct a single tournament or maintain the infrastructure laid for the purpose. If the Association is sincere and serious about its obligations it should come out from the deep slumber and give a new thought to the promotion of one of the most exciting game in the world. It is worthwhile to mention here that some few months back the Association had planned to conduct state level championship and even given advertisement in the newspapers but till date it has not materialized for the reasons best known to the Association authorities. There is no dearth of talent but what is needed to guide them in proper way and provide them the facilities required for the purpose. The state has notable players like Kuleen Kour and Deepanshi from Jammu who have the capability, strength, self- confidence and the iron will to prove their mettle but regrettably the Association has not taken the game seriously. Gurdeep Singh one of the officials of the Association when asked about his comments said 'how can you expect our players to perform well when the Tennis Association itself is sleeping' adding that 'all the three courts in the Stadium are in miserable condition as there is no maintenance worth the name'. Admitting that that there is no dearth of the talent but what was needed to properly guide and train them further to enable them to take part in the events at other states as well as at national level, he added. He said the objective could only be achieved if both the Association and the Government would work in tandem for the betterment of the game. Kuleen Kour, one of the promising prospect in the tennis, said 'she has not participated in any national tennis tournament so far adding that 'the Association has come into existence with a single motive to collect huge funds not for the game but for themselves'. Another tennis player Deepanshi said that ' as a player we are not certain about the future of the game as the association's irresponsible attitude is proving fatal for the game. 'We are now focusing more on studies rather than the game, as the Lawn Tennis in the state seems dying its own death due to the courtesy of the Association' adding that it (association) was bound to lose its identify if the present trend continued. |
