| Cabinet meet today: Kundal likely to replace Phunsog as CS | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Oct 22 Jammu and Kashmir government is all set to appoint financial commissioner Home BR Kundal as the new chief secretary of the state, replacing C Phunsog, who is retiring on October 31. The decision, to this effect, is likely to be taken in the state cabinet meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday morning. Well informed sources in the civil secretariat disclosed that Kundal is likely to be the first chief secretary from Jammu region. He would supercede C Phunsog, the first ever CS from Ladakh. The name of BR Kundal, financial commissioner Home, has been cleared by the chief minister after consultation with the coalition alliance, sources disclosed adding, his name is likely to get the final assent in the state cabinet meeting to be held here on Tuesday. Phunsog, a 1972 batch IAS officer was posted as new Chief Secretary in May 2006. He is retiring on October 31, 2007 after reaching his age of superannuation. Kundal, an IAS officer of 1972 batch is said to be junior to two other IAS officer serving in the state. However, his name was finalized keeping in view his remaining services and his past record. Sources said that Kundal is junior to BR Singh and Ajeet Kumar, who are said to be of IAS 1970 batch. An IAS officer of 1970 batch, Ajeet Kumar is without any work from last few years after his name figured in infamous jute mat supply scam. He is slated to retire in January 2008. It was learnt that he was booked by the Vigilance Bureau for his alleged involvement in a jute mat supply scam. The bureau has neither filed a challan in the court nor has the government placed him under suspension. Kumar was granted bail on October 25, 2004. Since then, he has not held any office though no suspension order has been served. The Central Government has not sanctioned his trial till date, sources added. On the other hand BR Singh is also retiring in early next year, which made the government to consider the name of Kundal for the coveted post, sources close to the chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad claimed. |
