| In-custody Ugandan makes abortive bid to escape | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 22 A retired Ugandan Army officer, who was arrested on August 3 this year from Satwari cantonment, today created a flutter when he jumped out a police Gypsy in an attempt to escape. Rashid Hassan alias Muhammed Yousaf, who claimed himself to be a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the Ugandan Army, was being escorted back by police from Janipur court complex, today when he suddenly jumped out of the gypsy near New Plots and tried to escape, sources said. However, cops escorting the African chased him and after a hot pursuit they arrested him from a lane in New Plots near Amphalla. Sources said that the former Ugandan Army officer was not handcuffed and he had entered into some heated arguments with the cops while returning from Janipur courts where he was produced before a city judge. One of the eyewitness revealed that the Ugandan jumped out of a flying squad vehicle and ran into a lane in order to escape from the police custody. However, the alert police officer rushed after him and arrested him. He was packed again into the Gypsy and taken back to JIC, he added. On August 5 he was sent to the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) of the police and subsequently charges were framed against him. The foreign national was arrested while he was roaming under suspicious circumstances near the high-security cantonment at Satwari on August 3. During preliminary investigations he had disclosed that he had taken exile after his father was executed by the Ugandan government. At the time of his arrest, it may be recalled here, the foreigner was not carrying any valid documents to prove his identity to the Army personnel on duty who had apprehended him near the cantonment in Satwari. The Ugandan belonged to Kampala, capital of Uganda in East Africa. Sources in the police department said that a photocopy of visa (No 900130 valid upto 13-12-2008) was recovered from his possession which also has his passport No B0497444, issued by the government of Uganda and vaild up to December 2015. However, he had failed to produce original documents claiming that the same were lying in Mumbai, where he was residing before coming to the state. The 42 year old foreigner was in India since 2005 during which he visited various places including Mumbai, Delhi, Ajmer and Srinagar, sources said adding, he served in the army for fifteen years before resigning from the job. |
