Firing its first pre-poll salvo the BJP Chief, Rajnath Singh, and other senior party leaders, including Shanta Kumar, a former Himachal Chief Minister held Congress responsible for all the ills, including sharp price rise of essential commodities, plaguing people in the country.
Addressing a largely attended rally at the Parade Grounds, under tight security cover, here today the BJP leaders claimed that whenever the Congress was voted to power people in India had to suffer the pangs of price rise. Rajnath Singh said that during the BJP led NDA Government the price level remained stable. He said that as a result of Congress rulers indulging in malpractices sharp price was allowed. Making a dig at the Congress he said that it was intriguing that farmers were being forced to sell wheat at Rs.750 a quintal and on the other the centre had okayed a plan of importing wheat at Rs. 1700 a quintal when the country had sufficient food grains.
Referring to the Government’s faulty handling of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir the BJP leaders said that the Congress has never taken any sincere step in this direction. The establishment in Pakistan had made several assurances to the then prime Minister,Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, but the successive Congress led Government in the centre failed to mount pressure on Islamabad for honouring those assurances. They said that the BJP led NDA Government had enacted POTA in the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, for tackling militancy but the moment the congress came to power it saw to it that the POTA law was scrapped. It had made a plea that enforcement of POTA had hurt the sentiments of muslims but the congress failed to realize that terrorism had no link with any religion. Those engaged in militancy had attacked the historic Chrar-i-Sharief and Hazratbal in Kashmir and carried out series of bomb blasts in various muslim shrines including the one in Ajmer.
Rajnath Singh also criticized the Government for having weakened the members of the Village Defence Committees(VDCs).He said instead of giving them sophisticated weapons and some financial assistance the Government has started a witch hunt against them and their enthusiasm for fighting militants had been reduced by giving them outdated weapons and starving them by not sanctioning any allowance.
He said that the country had been ruled by the Congress for 52 years but the pace of progress has been very slow. If India continued to be a poor nation it was the result of Congress misdeeds. He said the Congress had not learnt anything from the rapid economic strides Japan has been able to make during a brief period.
The BJP leaders told people that they should not consider the saffron brigade a small party.”We have decided to make our presence felt in Jammu and Kashmir during the next election,”they added. They said “we have already constituted party booth committees in 70 Assembly constituencies and we are confident in winning atleast 25 seats in the next poll.”
Rajnath Singh made it clear that “even if we are not able to form the Government its strings will be in our hands. If the ruling party does not work as per our designs it will be forced to support us for forming the Government.”He said that the BJP will not allow the sacrifices of saffron brigade workers and leaders, including Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Pandit Prem Nath Dogra to get waste. He said the Saffrom brigade workers and leaders had suffered tribulations and lost lives for keeping the national flag flying in Jammu and Kashmir.
