| HR abuses continuing, leadership must respond boldly: Mehbooba | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Oct 23 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) resident Mehbooba Mufti has said that the continued abuse of human rights in the state calls for a major and bold response from the political leadership of the country. While addressing a public gathering in Pulwama today she said isolated probes would add up to nothing considering the highly disturbing scenario that is emerging as a result of loss of life and property as a result of such incidents. Mehbooba said nothing short of a well thought out reduction of forces engaged in internal security duty could help in addressing the situation. That is why, she added, the PDP had for quite sometime advocated reduction of troops and revocation of special powers granted to them to tackle a situation that no longer exists. Referring to the latest remarks by the Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad about the "complete normalization of the situation in Kashmir", while addressing a function in Srinagar yesterday, Mehbooba said if the C.M's acknowledgement of the improvement is genuine he must endorse openly the call in reduction of forces. His voice, if added to the general yearning among the people could be of immense value and relief to people, she added. Mehbooba said the National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah too has acknowledged that the situation could be thrown back to early 90's if the human rights violations continued. But, she said, it is unfortunate that even while making such observations the National Conference leader would ridicule the demand for troop reduction and revocation of special powers spearheaded by the PDP. She said her party was only channelizing the popular sentiments of the people of the state who had waded through pools of blood to give peace a chance. "If they will have to be treated as suspects and burdened with over bearing security, the positive gains of the past could be easily negated", she said and added it is the time that instead of picking holes in the PDP demand, all right thinking people add their voice to it. Mehbooba said unfortunately the vested political interest and certain other elements were joining forces to engineer something of a "grand alliance" against the PDP. "Our fault is just that we are trying to channelize the people's demand within the constitutional and democratic space of the country", she said. Although these demands will have to be taken seriously as has actually been done by the Prime Minister when he set up a mechanism for addressing them Mehbooba said The PDP President said the incidents like the one at Kupwara in which ReT teacher was murdered in cold blood are no more isolated happenings. They conform to a pattern; she said adding that the problems between the security forces and the civilians arise only in areas where they live in congested conditions. Since the actual violence is going down, the presence of security forces in civilian areas naturally causes friction. If this fundamental principle of security deployment, that garrisons should be away from civilian population is violated any longer, she warned, there could only be more trouble. Mehbooba visited Malangpora, Puchal, Gongu, Guddar, Newa, Kisrigam, Pinglina, Uthora and Hagripora etc. She was accompanied by Mohammad Khlail Bandh MoS R&B and distrct president Shopian/Pulwama Abdul Razaq Zaoura and other party workers. She allocated Rs 25 lakhs out of her MPLADS funds for various works in these areas. Meanwhile, PDP has expressed shock and grief over the fire broken out at Margan Doda where 150 houses are reportedly gutted injuring over 100 people. The party has demanded free ration, rehabilitation of families and disbursement of compensation before the onset of winter. |
