| Jammu wakes up to history as Azadi express chugs in | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 28: The city of temples today enthusiastically woke up to free wheeling history of Indian independence spanning over a century and a half as the unique train Azadi express hit the platform at local railway station this morning. This Sunday was unique in the winter capital as people of all age groups thronged to a track near the parcel house of the railway station where the Azadi express had come to a halt for next three days. The train with 12 coaches on a nationwide journey is on its ninth halt in the winter capital to showcase the modern history of India. Among early comers to catch a glimpse of the Azadi express was the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad who witnessed the exhibition depicting the transformation of the country from the era when it was one of the richest nations of the world, to the time it was under the shackles of Britishers to regaining its past glory. The Exhibition train 'Azadi Express' which was flagged off from Delhi by Central Minister for HRD Mr. Arjun Singh and Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mr. P. R. Das Munshi reached here early this morning. The train is placed near the parcel section of Railway station Jammu and will remain open for common people and school students from 10 am to 5 pm daily for 3 days after which it is scheduled to leave for Chandigarh. Jammu is the 9th stop of the train. The train is scheduled to cover 68 stations throughout the country. The exhibition prepared by Directorate of Advertisement and Visual Publicity is mounted in the 12 coaches of the train. The story of the freedom struggle strating with Revolt of 1857 and its different phases are depicted with the help of photographs, murals and audio-video mediums. The exhibition is very informative for the students and the common masses. Chief Minister recalled that the defiance displayed by Mangal Pandey at Barrackpore flared the first war of independence in 1857 which was fought under the banner of last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar. Due to their uprising, the people of the country came out of their deep slumber and started raising their voice against the Britist rule thereby winning the independence. Azad said that the sacrifices and vision of our great freedom fighters to secure a free and self reliant India have borne fruit and the exhibition reminds us to emulate their examples and values in our lives for evolving into better and zealous citizens of tomorrow. The Chief Minister said that during the last 60 years the country have witnessed tremendous transformation from an underdeveloped to a developed nation with remarkable strides in the field of Information Technology, Science and Technology, Agriculture and industrialization which have been suitably displayed in the exhibition. He maintained that in the present era of globalization and liberalization when India is making its presence felt in all the field and is poised to becoming a global super power, one must not forget that problems like poverty, illiteracy, backwardness still need to be tackled. Azad called upon the people especially the youth to witness the exhibition which will infuse in them a renewed inspiration to work for eliminating the social evils like our freedom fighters so that the country marches to a new horizon of economic and social equality and prosperity. He hoped that time is not far when India once called the Golden bird due to its rich culture and thriving economy regains its pristine glory and fame. |
