| Tension in Bhaderwah | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 28: Tension erupted in Bhaderwah town today as more than a dozen people, including four women, were injured in a stampede when police resorted to air shots and lathi-charge on a mob agitating against the acquisition of land for Jammu University campus at Bhaderwah today, official sources said. At least 16 people were injured in the stampede, reports said. However, according to sources at the Civil Hospital, Bhaderwah, eight injured, including three women, were admitted there. About 50-70 locals had gathered to press for their demand for compensation against the land acquired by the varsity, when officials including the Sub-district Magistrate and the Tehsildar, along with the police came for land identification. The people were agitating against the authorities, demanding compensation for their land taken for the campus. ''After the mob started pelting stones on the authorities, police resorted to aerial fire and cane-charge, which caused the stampede,'' official sources said. Some police personnel also sustained injuries in the stampede, they added. |
