| Man-animal violence flares up in Poonch | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 28: With the militancy budging down, though temporarily, the frontier district of Poonch is caught up in different kind of violence –man-animal conflict which is taking dangerous turns. Close to the heels of killing three wild bears in Saujian area of Poonch, the man-animal conflict turned further repugnant as villager last night killed three more bears around the same area. According to the Forest and Wildlife officials, a she bear and her two cubs were axed to death by irate residents of a Poonch village after they attacked some boys in the area. The bears strayed into Bedar village in Sabzian area of the district last night and mauled some boys after which angry locals attacked them, officials said here today. The villagers carrying torches attacked the she bear and her cubs with axes. Wildlife officials today visited the village and recovered the carcasses of the bears, they said adding that two cases have been registered under the Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife Act and JK Forest Act against the villagers. On Tuesday, the villagers killed three wild bears in same area. The bodies of three beasts were recovered by a team of forest officials the next day. One of them was full grown female while two others were young ones- both male and female. According to some village elders, people of the area were terrorised by the attack of bears, therefore, they wanted to get rid of them. Many people have fallen victims to the bears but the authorities concerned did not bother to do anything in this regard. It may be recalled here that last month, a team of forest department officials recovered the snow leopard's body with multiple injures in the neck from Bafliaz area in the Pir-Panchal ranges of Surankote tehsil. That was the first instance of killing of the snow leopard in Pir-panchal ranges in the last two decade. This recent spate of killings of a snow leopard and the wild beers in Poonch district has opened eyes to a dangerous trend. Snow leopard, black bear, leopard, goral, hog deer, musk deer, jungle cat, monal pheasant. partridge, quail and chakor will be extinct if protection is not provided to them. In fact the claims like the presence of rare species like snow leopards in Poonch and Rajouri if true call for quick measures to rescue them. This will be in keeping with the present global emphasis on giving wildlife its due sanctuaries. The danger otherwise is that the wildlife may hunt human habitations. Indeed it has been happening in Poonch and Rajouri now and then. |
