| NC grinds axe, amid growing differences within coalition | | Farooq, Omar meets Sonia; to meet again in Nov | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 28 Amidst tug of war between ruling alliance partners — Congress and PDP — largest opposition party in the state legislative assembly, National Conference, has started grinding its axe Sources informed that amidst internal bickering between Congress and PDP, National Conference has entered into secret parleys with the Congress High Command in New Delhi. Sources divulged that a week back party patron Dr Farooq Abdullah and party president Omar Abdullah met UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi at New Delhi. The father-son duo had an hour long closed door meeting with the Congress Supremo at her residence, discussing state of affairs in the state. Party sources said that both of them are expected to meet Sonia again during next month. The growing proximity between Congress and NC was also evident from the statement of Dr Farooq Abdullah the other day. While the NC chief patron gave a clean chit to Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, he hold PDP patron Mufti Mohammed Sayeed and his ministers responsible for the prevailing sorry state of affairs in Jammu and Kashmir. However, Omar Abdullah during Iftar Party at Jammu had claimed that National Conference has no plans of tying up with Congress and on record had said that rather Congress would need National Conference in next elections. It may also be recalled here that dejected over PDP's continuous breast beating over demilitarization and revocation of AFSPA threatening to pull out of the coalition government, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in his last visit to Delhi had conveyed his displeasure to Sonia Gandhi and had even desired to quit the post of Chief Minister. Political observers feel that PDP, which has been repeatedly threatening to quit the coalition government, in fact has been adopting pressure tactics to force the Congress to have a pre-poll alliance with it. They said that aware about its position in Jammu PDP knows that it would not be able to score well in next elections from the region. However, Congress, which has had enough of PDP, this time around has been giving a cold shoulder to the ruling alliance partner, sources said. Sources in the PDP say that party patron Mufti Mohammed Sayeed has not liked the growing intimacy between the Congress and National Conference and he was annoyed after he came to know about the close door meeting between Abdullas and Sonia. The PDP may now intensify its demand of demilitarization and revocation of AFSPA, said sources, adding the party finds itself in a win-win situation. They said, if PDP pulls out of the coalition government on the issues of demilitarization and revocation of AFSPA, it would succeed to get a sympathy wave and in turn would easily strengthen its base in valley and even if its threats are hoax then too it has a good chance of building pressure on the government for early polls. |
