The Government has decided to strengthen the security grid in the state’s winter capital without lowering the guard in Srinagar. Official sources said that during a recent meeting of senior police officers a decision was taken to beef up security on the national highway linking Srinagar with Jammu till the last batch of the move employees reach the winter capital.
According to the police the security cover in and around the civil secretariat were thinned after the offices closed in Srinagar. These very forces would be either posted in Jammu or deployed in other sensitive areas of Kashmir. The police said for full six months the civil secretariat in Jammu and the roads leading to the secretariat and the Assembly complex will be provided with a heavy security cover. Police said a three-km area around the civil secretariat would now onwards have additional police deployment. In addition to this mobile police vans have been pressed into service for checking not only the activities of militants but those of petty criminals also.
In the light of reports that militants may strike during the Diwali and target the shrine of Vaishnov Devi besides the Railway station and the main bus stands in Jammu additional companies of security forces have been deployed. However, reports from Katra said that the security cover, that had been provided during the Navratras, has been reduced but police and paramilitary forces keep a strict vigil on the mountain track leading to the shrine and in areas around the Bhawan.
A report said that the security bandobast continued to be lax at the Jammu railway station. A snap survey has revealed that most of the passengers and those visiting the railway platform for receiving or seeing off passengers enter the platform without being frisked and without using platform tickets. Surprisingly gadgets for scanning the baggage of passengers have remained out of order. The survey revealed that the security grid on the railway track between Jammu and Pathankot and between Jammu and Udhampur is yet to be further strengthened. There are a number grey areas on this track and militants could take advantage of it.
