Series of tourist festivals being organized

In order to promote tourism in the state, Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir is going to organize various festivals in the State.
First such festival will be organized in Kargil town from August 22 to August 24, 2006 and at Padam Zanskar from August 29 to August 30, with the collaboration of Kargil Hill Development Council.
Similar festival will be organized in the Valley in collaboration with Houseboat/Taxi Shikara Associations from October 28, 2006.
This was disclosed by the Director Tourism, Mr. Farooq Ahmad Shah, Director Tourism Kashmir at a press briefing held here today. He said tourism has good potential and for its exploration various festivals would be held in near future.
He said at Kargil the main attraction of the festival would be presentation of folk dance, folk songs and traditional art and culture. He said local sports like polo would be organized during the event, besides holding of handloom, food ,photo and fruit exhibitions
Shah informed that a Golf Championship would be organized at Kashmir Golf Course on September 5 this year and its 2nd and 3rd round would be held on September 9 and 16 respectively. The final of the championship will be played at RSGC on September 23. He said a famous Donga cruise in the Dal Lake from Nehru Park to Nagin Lake would be organized on from August 28. Kashmiri Wazwan will be available in the donga and the dogans will start their journey at 6 Pm every day during the festival.
Farooq said a 4-dayGulmarg festival in association with Gulmarg Development Authority will also be organized from September 7. During the festival golf championship, horse race, cycle race will be organized at Gulmarg. Cultural programmes would also be held during the championship by school children and artists of the Valley. Apart from this, water sports mela would also be organized at Manasbal by the Tourism Department from September 4 to September 6 in which students of various educational institutions shall be imparted water sports training.
The department of tourism has started the tracking and mountaineering equipment like tents, rucksacks, shoes, jackets and other mountaineering equipments can be hired at nominal charges.
